What Is a Numerologist?

Any system like (numerology 101) that believes in or gives significance to numbers other than their mathematical meaning, and/or connects numbers and patterns found in groups of numbers with events, objects, or people in the actual world, is known as numerology. There are several numerological systems, and a numerologist is someone who uses one of these systems to perform numerology or provide esoteric interpretations of numbers.

The pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Pythagoras claimed that all things may be described in terms of numbers, and his disciples, the Pythagoreans, are credited with the invention of numerology. Each number, in their opinion, had a magical meaning. Even individuals who don't believe in numerology but, for example, have a lucky number can witness the effects of this type of thinking.

Using numbers as a source of revelation was once known as arithomancy or arithmancy. These approaches to numbers, which were used by the Chaldeans, Greeks, and Hebrews in ancient times, align the letters of the alphabet with a set of numbers according to some standardized rule. A numerologist, who puts the separate numbers together and evaluates the meaning of the findings, can therefore render any word in numeric form. Using a similar technique, a numerologist today might read a person's name to reveal their personality, talents, aptitudes, and future. Some believe that a numerologist may discern a person's inner life, outer life, and path based on their name.

Despite its ancient origins, arithmancy and numerology continue to pique the interest of many people today. The second word may sound familiar because it was the name of a course Hermione studied in the Harry Potter novel The Prisoner of Azkaban. Many websites exist dedicated to arithmancy, numerology, and Harry Potter. Numerologists today may have ties to astrology or the tarot. In modern times, the technique is also tied to the I-Ching and Feng Shui, as well as Kabbalah or Qabbalah.

The Hebrew practice of numerology associated with the Kabbalah is called gematria or gematria. It is a form of alphabetic substitution used by a numerologist to unlock hidden meanings of scriptural and other texts. In this system, the numbers one through ten are aligned with the first ten letters of the Hebrew alphabet; the multiples of ten from 20 to 90 are aligned with the next eight; and the first four hundred—100, 200, 300, and 400—are aligned with the final four letters. English has four more letters in its alphabet than Hebrew, and the numerical associations are different for today’s numerologists. But the underlying search for meaning and understanding in both pursuits still have much in common.

A Numerologist's Role

Numerology has a long history, yet as a technique, it has evolved over time. Many people apply the ideas in their daily lives without thinking about it. Numerology services are provided by some professional consultants to evaluate situations, words, names, and numbers.

Numerologists usually start by calculating a "life path number" based on a person's birth date. A numerologist will figure this out by summing all of the numbers in a date. Except for some select two-digit "master numbers," the numerologist repeats the addition until the full date is reduced to a single number. This number is used by numerologists as part of a larger chart or report to infer a lot about a person's personality and influences.

Your Future About Numbers

Six numbers are frequently found in a numerology chart. The letters of your name are divided into three numbers: a "soul's urge," a "personality number," and an "attitude number." From your date of birth, a numerologist will usually compute three numbers. There's a "birth number," a "life path number," and an "attitude number," to name a few. Inner desires and personal satisfaction are referred to as the soul's urge. The personality number refers to the characteristics of your personality that you show to others. Your character's strength is represented by the power number. The birth number represents how others initially perceive you. The number of your life path tells the course you must take and links to your fundamental identity. The aptly called attitude number expresses your general attitude about something.

Modern numerologists still consult with customers in a few ways.

Answer questions about job and career options.

Provide an in-depth examination of your personality and behavioral tendencies.

Discuss the upcoming trend of occurrences.

Assist in personal development and self-assessment.

Make a list of possible dates for special occasions.

Assistance in deciding on a professional name, a business name, or a stage name.

Numerologists use a variety of mystical arts in their work. The use of numbers as symbolic numbers is a common characteristic of their occult activities. The majority of practitioners have a belief system that they use to deduce meaning. They then apply related numerological systems to their basic procedure. A tarot card reader, for example, might begin by drawing cards and then add details to that prediction using qualities supplied by a numerical code.

History of Numerologists

Apart from Pythagoras, there have been numerous famous examples of established numerologists throughout history. An Assyrian inscription commissioned by King Sargon II in the 8th century contains the oldest documented application of the ancient system of gematria. Gematria is also mentioned in a number of ancient Christian and Jewish scriptures. In the New Testament, there are at least two instances of gematria.

Numerology is intertwined with some alchemical beliefs. Jabir ibn Hayvan was a medieval alchemist who used complex numerology based on chemical compound names. In an attempt to reduce the world to numbers, he wrote hundreds of books and created the world's oldest known systematic taxonomy of chemical substances.

The 1658 speech "The Garden of Cyrus" by Sir Thomas Browne is a numerological work of art. His writing is regarded by modern researchers as an early literary contribution to Hermetic wisdom. Browne used the ubiquity of patterns of fives and diamonds in art and design to indicate intelligent design.

In the 1800s, Mrs. L. Dow Balliett was one of the most well-known numerologists. She was a pioneer in the field of numerology, having written some of the first books on the subject. Many modern numerological concepts, such as the "vibrational power of numbers," became popularized thanks to her work.

Some Systems of Numerology

Pythagorean numerology was invented by the Greek mathematician Pythagoras. It assigns meaning to the numbers 1-9. Numerologists use this system to depict the attributes of a person inside and out.

Chaldean numerology is an older occult system. It is based upon the numbers 1-8 and gives more specific meaning to various numbers from 1-52. Numerologists use this system to find lucky and unlucky numbers.

Cheiro numerology is a technique developed in the 1800s by William John Warner, a well-known clairvoyant. His method was based on Chaldean numerology, although he concentrated on modern uses of the ancient theory. Warner rose to prominence as a result of his predictions of the Russian revolution, World War II, the 1926 Trade Union Strike in England, and other historical events in English politics.

The Hebrew alphabet is used to create Kabbalah numerology, which only employs a person's name to extract meaning. Following the adoption by Hollywood stars like Britney Spears and Madonna, it has become one of the more popular types of numerology.
